How to build a balanced team by type

Beginner15 minGames

Learn to cover all 18 weaknesses with just six Pokémon. Step-by-step guide with examples.

  1. Pick a core of three types

Start with water, fire, and grass. These three cover each other and resist most neutral attacks.

  2. Add steel or fairy coverage

A steel or fairy type covers the dragon, dark, and fighting weaknesses the core leaves open.

  3. Fill with complementary types

The last two slots depend on your meta: ground for electric, flying for fighting, or psychic for poison.

A balanced team doesn’t need the six strongest Pokémon — it needs every attack type to have at least one resistance on the team.

The water-fire-grass core

This classic trio covers each other: water resists fire, fire resists grass, grass resists water. It’s the most solid starting point.

Steel or fairy coverage

Steel brings resistances to normal, flying, rock, bug, steel, grass, psychic, ice, dragon, and fairy. It’s the type with the most resistances in the game.

Situational filler

The last two slots depend on what you face. In competitive formats, check the current meta threats.
